Copper  Chombhu – Traditional Southern Tamil Nadu Kalasam for Temple & Home Festivals

What is Copper Chombhu?

Copper Chombhu (also called Copper Kalasam or Sombu) is a traditional copper water pot widely used in Southern Tamil Nadu rituals, temple festivals, and home ceremonies. This sacred vessel has been used for centuries in Hindu worship for storing holy water, performing abhishekam, and conducting traditional rituals. The beautiful polished copper shine adds sacred elegance to any festival or pooja.

Traditional Southern Tamil Nadu Design

  • Round pot shape with wide belly (kalasam style)
  • Narrow neck with wide flared rim for easy pouring
  • Smooth polished copper with beautiful reddish-golden shine
  • No handle, no spout – traditional simple design
  • Flat stable base – sits securely during rituals
  • Pure copper – authentic traditional material
  • ✅ WASHABLE – Pure copper, can be cleaned with water

Perfect for Temple Festivals & Home Rituals

Temple festivals: Essential vessel for temple ceremonies, processions, and large-scale rituals. Widely used in Southern Tamil Nadu temples during festivals like Panguni Uthiram, Chithirai, Aadi Perukku, and Navaratri.

Home festivals: Perfect for home celebrations like Varalakshmi Vratam, Golu, Pongal, and family pooja ceremonies. The traditional design brings authentic Tamil culture to your home.

Abhishekam rituals: Hold sacred water, milk, panchamrit, or holy liquids for pouring over deity idols during abhishekam.

Kalasam setup: Use as the main kalasam pot for auspicious ceremonies. Fill with water, place mango leaves and coconut on top (sold separately).

Storing holy water: Store Ganga water, temple theertham, or sacred water for daily pooja use.

Why Copper is Sacred

Copper has been used in Hindu rituals for thousands of years. It purifies water, has antimicrobial properties, and is considered highly auspicious in Vedic tradition. Water stored in copper vessels is believed to balance the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) in Ayurveda.

Care & Maintenance

Wash with water after each use. Clean with tamarind paste, lemon juice, or salt and vinegar to remove tarnish and restore shine. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Copper naturally develops a patina over time – this is normal and considered sacred.
