Brass Urli Serving Bowl with Lid · Tin Layer Coating
Pure Brass · Eeyam / Kalai Lining · Three Sizes
This heavy-gauge, pure brass serving bowl is styled after the traditional South Indian Urli and features a beautifully fitted brass lid with a solid top knob. Crafted with no compromise in material thickness, it comes with a high-mirror golden polish on the outside to bring an authentic heritage look to your dining table or pooja room.
Crucially, the interior of the bowl is lined with a traditional, thick tin layer coating (Eeyam/Kalai). According to centuries of culinary practice, raw brass reacts naturally with sour ingredients, curds, or citric juices. This food-safe tin lining provides a complete protective barrier, making it perfectly safe for storing and serving hot rice, payasam, festival prasadham, sambar, and traditional sweets without any chemical reaction or alteration in taste. This functional, heirloom-quality cookware item is excellent for daily household kitchen use, offering spiritual purity during festival feasts and absolute durability for generations.
Tradition Outside · Thoughtful Care Within
“At Sri Swaminathan & Co, Since 1973, the beauty of brass is only part of the story. The traditional tin lining places a layer between the food and the brass beneath, reminding us that the care inside a vessel matters as much as the heritage it brings to the table.”
The benefit of a continuous, intact tin lining is that it separates food from direct contact with the brass beneath. This is a lined brass vessel, not a solid tin vessel. The lining needs care and may need renewing with use; if it wears through and exposes brass, stop using it for food until it has been professionally re-tinned. Follow the maker’s guidance on suitable foods, serving time, cleaning, and whether heating is permitted.
When you buy from Sri Swaminathan & Co, you are buying directly from a 53-year family legacy in Kumbakonam (since 1973). We never compromise on metal thickness or weight density. Every vessel is lined with genuine, heavy-gauge tin layer coating applied by skilled local craftspeople who carry forward generations of metal-working knowledge

Care & Maintenance
Made from super fine quality brass with a golden powder coated polish — gives a satin gold glow like a gold statue. Purely for decor and dry display. If used for pooja rituals, the golden polish layer will peel off over time. Keep it dry — and it will look as fresh as the day you bought it. Always.
No restrictions for pooja rituals. Avoid harsh chemicals to preserve its traditional antique look. The dark patina is intentional — it deepens the beauty over time.
Powerful. Preferred for active pooja rituals — no restrictions. Traditional Cleaning Method: Use dara liquid and cashew nut seeds — an ancient method used by temple priests for generations. Gently rub with cashew nut seeds dipped in dara liquid. Rinse clean. Your idol will look brand new. Cleaning once every 30 days is recommended if used regularly for pooja.
