Shiva Parvati Family Tanjore Painting – The Most Complete Family Portrait in All of Creation

Every family has a portrait. A moment captured when everyone is together — when the parents are present, the children are close, the home is whole. In the Hindu tradition, the most beloved of all such portraits is this one. The Shiva Parivaar — the divine family of Mount Kailash, complete and at rest.

Lord Shiva stands to the left — blue-complexioned, Trishul in hand, the crescent moon and the sacred Ganga resting in his matted hair, the tiger skin at his waist, the rudraksha mala around his neck, the serpent coiled at his shoulder. He is the destroyer of ignorance, the lord of time, the one who holds the universe in his matted locks — and yet here, in this painting, he is simply a father. Present. Steady. Holding the space for his family the way he holds the cosmos — without effort, without drama, without ever letting go.

Goddess Parvati sits beside him — golden-complexioned, magnificently crowned, her green silk saree falling in perfect classical folds. Young Murugan, the divine child, sits on her lap — small, luminous, already carrying the authority of the deity who will one day command the armies of the gods. Ganesha sits to her right — the beloved elder son, the remover of obstacles, the one who must be invoked before anything else begins, present here in the family portrait as he is present at the beginning of every sacred undertaking.

Shiva Parvati Family Tanjore Painting | 22K Gold Foil | Detailed View of Vahanas | 12 x 10 Inch | Sri Swaminathan & Co

At the lower left, Nandi — the sacred white bull, Shiva’s most devoted attendant, the gatekeeper of Kailash — sits in quiet, faithful service. At the lower right, the peacock — Murugan’s vahana, the bird of grace and divine beauty — stands in full blue-green plumage. And at the very centre of the composition, at the base, the Shivalingam — the most sacred symbol of Shiva’s presence, the axis around which the entire family is gathered.

The deep midnight blue background is the eternal sky of Kailash — the cosmic mountain that exists beyond the reach of ordinary time. This is not a scene from a story. This is the eternal state of the divine family — always together, always complete, always at rest in the knowledge that the universe is held.

What This Painting Conveys – And Why Every Home Needs It

The Shiva Parivaar is the most complete image of the divine family in the Hindu tradition — and it carries a meaning that goes far beyond theology. It is the image of what a family can be at its highest.

Shiva — the father who is both the most powerful force in the universe and the most present parent on Kailash. Parvati — the mother who is both the Goddess of all creation and the one who holds her children in her lap with the simplest, most complete love. Ganesha — the son who clears the path for everyone else before he takes a single step himself. Murugan — the son who carries wisdom so complete that he taught it to his own father. Nandi — the devotee who serves without condition. The peacock — the beauty that accompanies grace wherever it goes.

Every member of this family is, in their own right, a complete deity. Together, they are something more — the image of a family in which every individual is fully themselves, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Place this Shiva Parvati Family Tanjore painting in your home and feel what it does to the quality of the space. In the pooja room, it becomes the most complete shrine possible — every dimension of the Shaiva tradition present in a single frame. In the living room, it becomes the painting that anchors the home in the energy of divine family — the reminder that the highest aspiration of a household is not wealth or success, but the quality of love and presence that this family embodies. It is the painting that makes a house feel like a home.

The Perfect Gift – For Every Sacred Milestone

This Shiva Parivaar Tanjore painting is the most universally meaningful gift in our entire collection. It speaks to every family, every tradition, every milestone.

For a wedding — the blessing of the divine family upon the human family that is beginning. For a housewarming — the most auspicious image to consecrate a new home. For parents — the painting that honours the sacred role they hold. For grandparents — the image of the family complete, the generations gathered, the lineage held. For the NRI family living far from home — the painting that brings Kailash into the living room, the divine family into the daily life, the feeling of home into every morning.

If you are looking for one painting that says everything to everyone, this is it.

The Craft – What You Are Looking At

Every raised detail — Shiva’s Trishul, Parvati’s crown, the children’s jewellery, Nandi’s form, the peacock’s plumage, the Shivalingam, the ornate gold border with its scrollwork arch and pearl dot detailing — is built by hand using the Makku relief technique. Chalk-and-adhesive paste, applied layer by layer, sculpted before the gold foil is laid. Then authentic 22 Carat gold foil, applied leaf by leaf, burnished by hand to achieve the depth and warmth that only real gold can hold.

No two Shiva Parvati Family Tanjore paintings are identical. This is a one-of-a-kind original.

“On Kailash, the most powerful force in the universe sits beside his wife, holds his children close, and lets his bull rest at his feet. That is the image this painting carries into your home — not the god of destruction, but the father at rest. Not the goddess of power, but the mother who holds. Not the deities of wisdom and war, but two children, safe, in the presence of their parents. Bring this family home. And feel what it does to yours.”
